If you only have a few days to spend in Cairns, we’ll let you know the most important places to visit. Here’s our three day Cairns Australia itinerary.
You can spend one day to explore most of the city – bring your swimming gear.
Start off the day by heading downtown and check out Rusty’s Market for some excellent produce. Bring some cash and pick up some groceries for tonight or the next couple of days. You’ll find all the regular fruit and veg you’re used to and also some handmade goods. After you’ve bought some dragon fruit and had a coffee, head through the CBD and check out whichever shops you’re interested in; Cairns has plenty of upscale shops to choose from. And it’s ocean front boardwalk is nothing to sneeze at.
Next, head down to the promenade to see the park. Cairns has put a lot of work into their ocean side area and it shows. Plenty of shops and restaurants litter the boardwalk and the green-space of the park has plenty of places for picnics. Once you’re content with strolling around, hop in the free lagoon to cool off. It’s our favorite pool we’ve ever visited. Enjoy your time here – it was one of the most relaxing places we had the pleasure to enjoy.
Snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef!
We booked with SeaQuest and it was completely worth it. Shop on BookMe to find a deal your booking. This will take up your whole day, so be aware of that. They also have prescription masks, which I found incredibly helpful because my eyesight is so bad and I don’t have contacts.
The botanic gardens are a wonderful stop if you like seeing wildlife and a variety of plants. The grounds for the garden are quite large and offer many hiking trails, picnic locations, and run-ins with animals of all sorts. We saw wallaby, geckos, bush turkeys, and many butterflies.
The orchid exhibit is not to be missed. It has a variety of of exotic plants and live-in butterflies that flutter about. If you’re really lucky, you might even be in town when the Titan Arum blooms. Fantastic!
Get ready for a little exercise. The botanic gardens have a handful of hiking trails for you to choose from. Bring some water and get ready to move. Plenty of options exist for those less inclined to work too hard.
Time for some chow. If you’re the frugal type like us you packed your own lunch. Otherwise the gardens have a lovely cafe to visit and recharge your batteries at.
After your nosh, pick a couple of places in the park to explore, and head out for a little more adventure. You’ll see a variety of garden options, pools to visit, friendship gardens and MORE!
Do yourself a favor and pick a thing or two before you start roaming around.
Have a little extra money and want to replace the Botanic Gardens or exploring the CBD with something more adrenaline producing? Here are a couple of other options in the area.
A three day Cairns Australia itinerary is just the right amount of time. You’ll get to see the city, the Great Barrier Reef, and a bit of tropics that make the region a hotspot for outdoor adventure.
