We love New Zealand. All in all we spent 3 months there and it has been a wonderful experience. We can’t believe how quickly it went by. Everything from the climate to the scenic views have been spectacular. People have been friendly and our day to day life has been stress-free.
There are, however, some downsides to this wonderful country down under. We’re going to highlight some serious, and not so serious, bad things about New Zealand.
(Kind of) Bad Things About New Zealand
First we’re going to talk a little about some things in NZ we found to be minor inconveniences. They didn’t really make living in NZ worse, but we really noticed the difference from our home life in the USA.
Hole in the Ozone Layer
You will burn here. Lather on the sun block. On the plus side, it’s starting to close back up.
No Screens on Windows
Not sure what the thought on these windows are, but they’re excellent for letting bugs into your place.
No Air Conditioning
This is nit-picky and wouldn’t be an issue if the windows had screens on them. Maybe it was just all the places we stayed in didn’t have A/C, but we never saw it in any homes – we saw a few in stores. Combine that with the no screens on the windows and you’re in a sticky, bug-filled predicament.
I think New Zealanders are so nice (and often passive aggressive) that they tend to let off steam when they drive. Don’t take my word for it, ask the locals. They’re perfectly nice when they get out of the car, though.
You’ll see New Zealand is putting a lot of money and effort into repairing and improving their roads, but the fact remains a lot of the infrastructure is windy and, often, without guardrails. Be on your best guard when driving here.
Really Bad Things About New Zealand
With all the superfluous things out of the way, we can bring attention to some of the more serious issues New Zealand is dealing with.
Highest Teen Suicide Rate
This horrifying phenomenon stunned us. For as promising and photogenic New Zealand is, something is missing for many teens in New Zealand.
High Incarceration Rate
This was another shocker to us. NZ current has the 7th highest incarceration rate among Western countries. Whether it’s due to fewer opportunities, purposeless people, or draconian laws, New Zealand remains a country that imprisons more people than most Western nations.
Highest Housing Cost in the Western World
Good luck buying a house here. Prices are through the roof. Bad pun, sorry.
High Obesity Rate
You’d think that with all the trails and mountains to climb that obesity wouldn’t be much of an issue. Unfortunately it is. New Zealand currently ranks 3rd most overweight country.
This list is in no way designed to trash NZ. It’s a wonderful place with great people – and yes, you should visit it. But we should also keep in mind that different places around the world, including New Zealand, struggle with their own problems. We’d be doing them a disservice if we just pretended everything was a utopian wonderland.
